A “lifetime” sewer warranty: seven details to read first

A headline warranty is less useful than the terms behind it. Product defects, workmanship, maintenance, and consequential damage can be treated differently. Ask for the actual document before comparing two sewer repair proposals on warranty length alone.

Identify who stands behind it

Is the warranty from the installing company, a manufacturer, or both? Get the legal company name and a way to submit a claim. Ask whether coverage survives a change of owner and whether registration or inspection documents are required.

Read what is excluded

Roots outside the repaired section, new damage, blocked connections, misuse, or a grade issue may fall outside the scope. Ask how the covered pipe length is defined and whether access and restoration costs are included when a claim is accepted. Do not infer these terms from the word “lifetime.”

Keep the installation record

Retain the signed scope, specified system, final video, payment record, and maintenance instructions. Ask how complaints are investigated and what costs apply before a defect is confirmed. These practical steps make the warranty usable rather than merely reassuring at the point of sale.

Your next-step checklist

  • Name the responsible warranty company
  • Check transfer and registration requirements
  • Ask whether access and restoration are covered
