Offset sewer joints: can a liner get past the step?

An offset joint means neighboring pipe sections do not line up cleanly. The size and direction of the step matter: a minor irregularity and a severe obstruction are not the same repair problem. A liner should not be proposed without explaining how the offset affects installation and flow.

Turn the camera finding into a location

Ask for the measured distance from a stated access point, approximate depth, and surface location. Confirm whether the camera passes the offset and whether the rest of the lateral was surveyed. A camera that cannot pass does not show how much damage lies beyond the joint.

Ask about preparation and spot repair

Some irregularities may be manageable within a system’s installation limits; others require an access excavation or pipe correction. Ask what the product manufacturer permits and what the local approval requires. Avoid relying on a generic claim that lining fixes every joint.

Compare localized and full-length work

If one joint is the main concern, ask why the scope covers that section or the whole run. Several damaged joints may justify a longer solution, but the proposal should show them. Include restoration of any spot excavation when comparing totals.

Your next-step checklist

  • Mark the offset location and depth
  • Confirm whether the camera passed the joint
  • Ask whether geometry must be corrected first
